Barely four months have passed since the Shahbaz Sharif government was formed in Pakistan and clouds of crisis are looming over the Sharif government. Pakistani newspapers report that the Sharif government can fall at any time. It is reported that the PPP, a coalition party in the Sharif government, has offered Imran Khan a dialogue. Imran Khan is currently serving sentences in more than 200 cases and is suffering various kinds of torture in jail. The PPP said in a statement that they want to have a positive talk with Imran Khan.
The results of the general elections held in Pakistan in February were quite surprising. Despite putting in all its efforts, Sharif’s party PM-L-N could only get 72 seats, while the allies of Imran Khan’s party PTI won 100 seats. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s party won 54 seats in the elections. There are a total of 313 Lok Sabha seats in Pakistan, of which 169 are from East Pakistan and 144 are from West Pakistan. 157 seats are necessary for a majority.
Pakistani newspapers report that the Bilawal Bhutto Zardari-led Pakistan Peoples Party has said that if Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan is willing to talk, then his party is ready to hold talks with the former prime minister, who is currently in jail.
Senior PPP leader Khurshid Shah, while talking to the media in Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan, said, “It is being said that the PTI founder is ready for talks. If Imran Khan is ready for talks then it is a positive thing.” Shah welcomed the possibility of talks and called it a positive development.
“President Asif Ali Zardari has always tried to resolve problems through dialogue and the PPP will play its role whenever required,” Shah was quoted as saying by the Express Tribune newspaper. The PPP’s willingness to cooperate with Khan’s party comes amid heightened political instability following the PTI’s tough stance against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led government.
