Delhi Water Crisis: Sometimes yes and sometimes no; Himachal Pradesh’s stand on releasing additional water in Yamuna for Delhi is changing again and again.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who had denied having additional water while taking a U-turn in the Supreme Court, has said that he has additional water and is ready to release it for Delhi.
Sukhu said on Friday that Himachal Pradesh has excess water and is ready to give it to Delhi, Delhi should talk to Haryana. Talking to journalists, the CM said, ‘Whatever water Himachal Pradesh has, except the needs of our state, we are ready to give all the water to Delhi or any other state.
There is no justification for stopping the water. The water will reach Delhi through Haryana. Delhi has to reach an agreement with the Haryana government.’ When asked whether Himachal has excess water, Sukhu said – absolutely we have.
It was denied in the Supreme Court a day earlier
Himachal Pradesh on Thursday retracted its previous statement and told the Supreme Court that it does not have excess water. The Himachal Pradesh government withdrew its previous statement and said that it does not have 136 cusecs of excess water.
The Advocate General of Himachal Pradesh said that the earlier statement about the availability of surplus water was not correct and he sought permission from the bench to withdraw it, but the court seemed angry about this. The bench said angrily, ‘This is a very serious and sensitive matter.
You do not understand the consequences of your statement. You made such a casual statement without understanding its consequences. If it was not such an important matter, we would have kept it pending to hold you guilty of contempt.’
Earlier I had said that I was ready to give water
The apex court had directed the Himachal Pradesh government to release 137 cusecs of surplus water to the national capital on June 7. The Himachal Pradesh government had said that it has 137 cusecs of surplus water for Delhi.
