Kolkata . Indian teenage grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa believes that going by his current form, D Gukesh is a strong contender to win the World Chess Championship title against his rival Ding Liren of China. The World Championship is to be played in Singapore from 25 November to 15 December. In April, at the age of 17, Gukesh became the youngest player to win the Candidates Tournament. 2024 was remarkable for him, in which he played an important role in India winning a historic gold medal in the 45th Chess Olympiad.
Liren, in contrast, has struggled this year and has not been able to secure a single win in the classical format since January. “Looking at Gukesh’s recent form, he is definitely a strong contender for the title,” Praggnananda told reporters here. But the World Championships is a different tournament altogether. I am sure Gukesh must be preparing really well. Let’s see how the match progresses.
Praggnananda has come here to play in the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid and Blitz Tournament. His first match in the tournament will be against world number one player Magnus Carlsen. βIt will be very exciting to start my campaign against Carlsen,β he said. I hope I will do my best. Of course, everyone is excited to play with Magnus. It is also good for tournaments. He is the best player. It is really exciting for all the players.
