Delhi Chief Minister Atishi wrote a letter to the Chief Secretary regarding the Chhath Puja holiday in the national capital. Atishi said that Chhath Puja is an important festival for the people of NCT of Delhi. Accordingly, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi has decided to declare 7 November 2024 as a public holiday on the occasion of Chhath Puja. The announcement came hours after Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena wrote to the Chief Minister requesting him to declare November 7 a holiday.

Making the announcement on X, Atishi wrote, I am happy to inform that the Delhi government has decided that 7th November will be a holiday for the festival of Chhath, so that all the Purvanchali brothers and sisters can celebrate the festival of Chhath with pomp and show. He also shared his signed order regarding the decision. The order states that Chhath Puja is an important festival for the people of NCT of Delhi. Accordingly, the Government of NCT of Delhi has decided to declare November 7, 2024 as a public holiday on account of Chhath Puja.

Earlier in the day, Raj Niwas Delhi in a post on X said that the Honorable Lieutenant Governor has written a letter to the Honorable Chief Minister requesting him to forward the file for declaring November 7, 2024 as a public holiday. This festival is dedicated to the worship of Sun God and is celebrated by the people following a strict routine lasting for four days. The rituals and traditions of this festival include fasting, offering Arghya to the rising and setting sun, holy bath and meditation while standing in water.
