After heavy rains, the water got accumulated so much in Delhi’s Old Rajendra Nagar area that three UPSC students died in the coaching centre. There was a lot of politics on this issue. Delhi’s Aam Aadmi Party government and the Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena came face to face. Meanwhile, the Lieutenant Governor visited several areas of Delhi today and expressed his displeasure on seeing the condition of the drains clogged with filth. He called it horrific and shameful and ordered the cleaning of the drains as soon as possible. He informed about the condition of the drains by tweeting one after the other on the social media platform. He said, this is why floods occur.
Sharing the picture of the drains, he said, Today I visited Barapula, Kushak and Sunehri drains and the historic Barapula bridge in Nizamuddin. Here
The reality on the ground is appalling and shameful. Immediate steps need to be taken to ensure the flow of water to reduce flooding.
The Lt Governor further said, these 3 main drains are under I&FCD and MCD. They carry rainwater to Yamuna. Despite many claims, silt and dirt have not been removed from these for years. In his next tweet, he said, out of 12 drains under culvert in Barapula, only 5, out of 6 in Sunehri, and out of 7 in Kushak, 4 are open. The rest are closed. This has reduced the water flow capacity significantly. This results in backflow of water and flooding in the colonies.
