The incident has rekindled BJP’s allegations of corruption in the Karnataka Congress-led administration, especially in the state excise department. This follows previous allegations by the Karnataka Wine Merchants Association, which had accused the department, including minister RB Thimmapur, of taking bribes for bar licenses and excise duty transfers. The association alleged that around 1,000 illegal licenses were given last year, with bribes of up to Rs 70 lakh allegedly taken per license, potentially taking the total figure of corruption to around Rs 700 crore.
