What is NIRF ranking
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking is released every year by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. NIRF was approved by MHRD and launched by the Minister of Human Resource Development on 29 September 2015. The ranking was released by the government for the first time in 2016. NIRF was formed to rank universities, colleges, engineering, management and pharmacy institutes in the country. Earlier, there was no government institution for ranking. Private institutions used to release rankings, which raised many questions. But now, government and private institutions are ranked by the government on the basis of various parameters.
NIRF ranking is given to the institutes on the basis of teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcome, outreach and inclusivity, perception. Talking about the weightage, 30 percent importance is given to teaching, learning, resources, 30 percent to research and professional practice, 20 percent to research, perception, outreach, graduation outcome, 10 percent to outreach and inclusivity and 10 percent to perception. Sustainability ranking will also be released from next year.
