Once the criteria are met, the license will be granted. Scindia further emphasized that the government would be happy to welcome Starlink once all the boxes are checked. To operate in India, Starlink will have to follow an established process that will include assured security measures against potential data and cyber threats. Scindia further noted that the government’s norms are strict and will ensure national security, stressing that it will be applied universally across all satellite providers.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said that the country is ready to give satellite internet license to Elon Musk’s Starlink. The only condition attached to the service is that it adheres to India’s strict security and regulatory requirements. According to Scindia, like any other satellite service, Starlink will have to meet India’s security protocols by addressing every concern in the government’s licensing format.

Currently satellite service provider companies like Jio Satellite Communications (Reliance) and OneWeb (backed by Bharti Group) hold satellite communications licenses in India. However, the government will remain adamant on not allocating satellite broadband spectrum independently as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will determine its price. This approach will further support India’s membership in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), by mirroring the international standard of regulated satellite spectrum allocation.
